Can Supplements or Lifestyle Changes Improve POR?

When egg yield is low, the patient-controlled, modifiable factors — supplements and lifestyle — are the most-searched and most-misunderstood topic. CoQ10, DHEA, and lifestyle changes can modestly improve efficiency and ovarian environment, but none restore lost reserve. This article summarizes what the evidence supports so you can spend effort (and money) where it may actually help. General education, not individual medical advice.

What the evidence says

Approach Proposed effect Evidence note
CoQ10 Mitochondrial support; may help older ovaries Promising, modest; not a miracle
DHEA / androgens May improve response in low-androgen states Mixed; needs monitoring, not for everyone
Growth hormone (omnitrope) Adjunct in selected poor responders Mixed; clinician-controlled
Smoking cessation Stops acceleration of reserve loss Strong (general health)
BMI / nutrition / sleep Supports overall reproductive health Indirect; no direct yield boost proven

Realistic expectations

  • Supplements may improve how well a limited reserve responds — not the size of the reserve.
  • Effects take ~1–3 months of consistent use; they are not cycle-day rescues.
  • More is not better; high-dose androgens especially need medical oversight.

What supplements can and cannot do

  • Can: support mitochondrial function and, in selected cases, improve response.
  • Cannot: reverse diminished ovarian reserve, or replace a needed protocol change or donor-egg discussion.
